Here you will explore the traditional ceremonial center of the Arhuaco people within two days. No one knows exactly when Nabusimake was established, but according to the memory of the Indians it should have been around 1780. The village is surrounded by a meter-high wall of natural stones.

1. DAY: AIRPORT VALLEDUPAR / SANTA MARTA – NABUSIMAKE

In the morning arrival at the airport in Valledupar (daily direct flights from Bogotá) and drive to Pueblo Bello, a small village on the northern side of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. From here it is only possible to continue with a 4 × 4 Jeep. The 25 km of dirt road can be completed in about two hours. The trip includes always a sense of adventure. Arrival around noon in the simple Maloka (hut of the Indians). In the afternoon first short hike to explore the region. 1 night in simple conditions but very authentic, together with the Arhuaco Indians or in one of the more simple hostels.

 2. DAY: NABUSIMAKE – VALLEDUPAR/SANTA MARTA

After breakfast enjoy a wonderful 4-hour hike to the “Cascada de Nabusimake”, passing idyllic Malokas and small settlements. Back in the Maloka lunch together with the Arhuacos before starting the jeep trip back to Pueblo Bello. In the late afternoon return to Valledupar or Santa Marta.

The two-day tour leads first to the Hacienda Baza, which is located north of Bogotá. Afterwards continue to Chivor, where you will get a small introduction to the world of the green stone the evening. The next day visit the Emerald Mine and an authentic country house. There you can take a typical miners lunch.

1. DAY: BOGOTÁ – CHIVOR

Drive in the morning from Bogotá in northern direction on the northern autobahn. At the height of Chocontá, continue on a beautiful back-country route to a great hacienda where lunch is included (Hacienda Baza). In the afternoon continue to the picturesque lake just before Chivor, which is crossed by a small ferry. Arrive at Chivor at the late afternoon and have dinner in a small restaurant (included). After dinner get a first introduction into the world of emeralds, on the origin, the characteristics and the processing of the green stone. Overnight in a simple village hotel.

2. DAY: CHIVOR – BOGOTÁ

After breakfast the miners clothing is distributed. With rubber boots, helmet, hammer, and headlamp head toward the emerald mines by jeep. On the way a short stop at a Granadilla plantation is included, where you get an explanation of the farmer about the tropical fruit, harvest and sale. Subsequently, the pitch-dark mine is entered. The miners explain where one or another stone may be found and what it means to work “underground” in Chivor. Around noon drive back towards Bogotá. On the way back a small, authentic finca is visited, which produces Panela (pressed into molds cane sugar) and where a simple and typical miners lunch can be taken. Arrival in Bogotá in the evening.
