CAÑO CRISTALES – THE RAINBOW RIVER

As of July, the Caño Cristales will once again sparkle in all its colors!

As every year, the Sierra de la Macarena National Park offers a unique natural spectacle that your customers should not miss: Between July and November, the river Caño Cristales shimmers in different colors (from bright red to green), as the aquatic plant Macarenia Clavijera is in its full color splendor at this time of year. On a hike along the river, you can marvel at the course of the river, the waterfalls and the pools, and in some places you can also take a refreshing dip in the pleasantly cool water.

For a trip to the Sierra de la Macarena, we recommend planning at least 2 nights in La Macarena. This small town in the Meta department is the starting point for excursions to Caño Cristales, which can be reached from here in around 20 minutes by boat followed by an about 1-hour hike.

During their stay in La Macarena, customers not only visit Caño Cristales, but also experience other natural and cultural highlights such as a cacao tour, a local music performance, a visit to the Ciudad de Piedras (stone town), which is engulfed by vegetation, and of course the exuberant local flora and fauna.

One of our hotel recommendations in the area is the Manigua-Lodge, which, with its optimal location, excellent service and delicious meals, is the perfect base from which to explore all the highlights of the Macarena.

Between July and November, flights to La Macarena are available from Bogota (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun), Medellin (Mon, Fri) and Villavicencio (Mon-Sun).
