In 2026, Colombia is undergoing a political transition: following the end of President Gustavo Petro’s term, a new president will be elected for the 2026–2030 period. The first round of voting took place on 31 May 2026. As no candidate secured an absolute majority, a runoff election will be held on 21 June.
For many international tour operators, this raises an important question: what impact could the elections have on tourism?
Travel in Colombia Remains Unaffected
Elections are a normal part of Colombia’s democratic process and generally have only very limited effects on tourism. Hotels, attractions, national parks, airports, and tourism services continue to operate as usual.
Only on election day itself may there be occasional additional security measures, local traffic regulations, or temporary restrictions on alcohol sales (“Ley Seca”). However, these measures rarely affect tourism programs in any significant way.
Tourism Remains a Strategic Economic Sector
Regardless of the election outcome, tourism is now considered one of Colombia’s most important sectors for future development. As one of the country’s most dynamic industries, tourism has steadily gained importance over recent years.
For this reason, observers do not expect any fundamental changes to tourism policy. The promotion of international tourism, the development of new destinations, and continued investment in tourism infrastructure are likely to remain priorities under the next administration.
Our Opinion
Based on current information, we do not expect any significant impact on existing or future travel plans to Colombia. Tourism infrastructure is operating normally, travel programs continue as planned, and Colombia remains one of Latin America’s most exciting destinations.
As with any political transition, we continue to monitor developments closely and will, of course, keep our partners informed of any relevant changes.
